Politician emails never get forwarded along in a good way. Heck,
has talked to nearly every major media outlet about spam fundraising from Democrats. They sound the same, basically lie, and are wicked annoying. We’ve called it Tragedy of the Common Texts.
But today in the span of a few hours, two different people I adore forwarded me emails from politicians. And they have at least one thing in common: they are newsletters on Substack, written with respect for their audience.
The first is Simple But Not Easy from
, a new entry on this platform with the alluring moniker “You know what Democrats are against. Here's what we're for. Big ideas for 2028.” A sample from his first four posts, The Democratic, debt-reducing alternative to the GOP’s healthcare blow-out, offers what we called for earlier this week: specifics! He also provides some heady perspective on “trade gravity”.The second is Déjà Vu and the House GOP’s Reckless Budget Bill from
, whose Dear Mainer newsletter writing we’ve previously recommended. The subtitle captures much of it - Health care cuts, tax breaks for the rich, and a ballooning debt: We’ve been here before. But the full thing is worth a read (link).
Golden goes back to 2017, but you can go back another generation to a much different Mainer (the summer is a verb kind) for the GOP approach to taxing & spending:
““What I call a voodoo economic policy … it’s kind of a 'let’s cut taxes and increase spending and somehow the budget will balance’” - George H.W. Bush.
Bush said that during the 1980 presidential primary. Only 982 days until the next one kicks off.
